In response to the ongoing need for data and analysis of governance practices in cooperatives, the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives (UWCC) is starting its second wave of data collection for the Cooperative Governance Research Initiative (CGRI). Launched in 2021, CGRI explores the unique governance structures, processes, and cultural dynamics of cooperatives across various sectors over time. The 2021 CGRI survey yielded enthusiastic responses from 500 cooperatives, capturing substantial diversity in terms of industry, type, size, age, and location and creating a baseline for the range and frequency of cooperative governance practices and strategies to meet member needs across sectors. The 2024 survey will be distributed in mid-May.

This ongoing research, now in its second phase, has been made possible with generous support of the cooperative community along with technical support from a volunteer Advisory Committee made up of representatives from national and regional cooperative organizations. As a proud member of the CGRI Advisory Committee, [INSERT YOUR ORGANIZATION’S NAME HERE] is committed to ensuring the research is timely, rigorous, and relevant to cooperatives in the real world.

The 2024 CGRI study will include an online survey of a diverse sample of cooperatives and follow-up interviews with a small group of respondents. UWCC will share findings through information and tools that help cooperatives benchmark, reflect on, and improve their governance practices. All data collected will remain confidential and no individual cooperative will be identifiable in UWCC’s reports.
